Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star, and Naem Nizam, editor of Bangladesh Protidin, have been elected as new president and general secretary of the Editors’ Council, respectively.
The council formed its new executive committee for the next two years at a meeting held at The Daily Star Centre on Sunday, according to a press release.
It said the tenure of the new committee will begin from October 1.
The new committee also includes Ittefaq Editor Tasmima Hossain as the vice president, Bonik Barta Editor and Publisher Dewan Hanif Mahmud as assistant general secretary, and Samakal Acting Editor Mustafiz Shafi as treasurer.
The new committee members are Manabzamin Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Jugantor Acting Editor Saiful Alam, Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shymal Dutta, and Dainik Azadi Editor MA Malek.
During the meeting, the council also decided to launch a website, recruit new members and organize seminars and events on press freedom and other journalism-related issues.
The council plans to hold a seminar in the coming months on strengthening the future of the print media and related challenges. It was also decided that the council will expand its activities and membership at the district level.
The Editors’ Council was established in 2013, with former Samakal editor late Golam Sarwar as the founding president.
The council’s aim is to play an active role in protecting press freedom, developing professional journalism and strengthening the editorial institution.
