Sanjay Dutt’s biopic “Sanju” starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead is already controversial before its grand opening on the silver screen.
The Indian National Commission of Women has reportedly received a complaint against actors Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma and director Rajkumar Hirani regarding a dialogue in the movie, according to the Hindustan Times.
“We have received such a complaint and we are forwarding it to the Electronic Media Monitoring Centre (EMMC) to take necessary action,” said NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma.
In the film, Anushka Sharma plays the character of a young journalist who is researching about Sanju’s life. In a scene from the movie, she asks Sanjay about his sex life and how many women he has slept with in the past. He replies “308 without counting the prostitutes. Shouldn’t they be counted separately?”
This particular dialogue created the controversy and the complaint was filed on Wednesday by advocate and social activist Gaurav Gulati who described the dialogue to be disrespectful towards sex workers.
The EMMC has been asked to monitor the complaint under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and report on violations of the program and advertising code.
The film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, and the cast includes Manisha Koirala, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal and Jim Sarbh, among others.
The film releases June 29 across 4,000 theatres in India.
