Stocks gain for second day

Stocks gained for the second straight session yesterday with increased trading activities. The rally was led by IT, cement and non-banking financial institutions. 

The Dhaka Stock Exchange benchmark index, DSEX, rose 47 points or 1% to 4,602.

The Shariah index, DSES, was up over 18 points or 2% to 1,083.

The comprising blue chips DS30 closed at 1,746 with a rise of 23 points or 1%.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Selective Categories Index, CSCX, was up 78 points to 8,675.

Trading activities still remained sluggish as turnover at DSE stood at Tk551-crore mark, an increase of more than 10% over the previous session.

Except food and allied that shed 3%, all the major sectors performed robustly, with IT rising 5%, cement 3.6% and non-baking financial institutions 3.4%.

Notably, most of the mutual funds secured worst positions in top ten losers' list due to post-record date adjustment.

The newly listed shares declined as Khulna Printing and Packaging Ltd lost 5%, Far East Knitting and Dyeing Industries Limited 6.6% and Tung Hai Knitting and Dyeing Limited 6.9%.

The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 304 issues traded, 207 gained, 67 declined and 30 remained unchanged. 

Lanka Bangla Securities said market roared hitting the day’s close crossing over the psychological level 4,600.

IDLC Investments said clienteles still were assessing valuation level of the market and re-positioning in lucrative blue chip scrips.

Zenith Investments said DSE indexes extended gains, as investors simultaneously gathered to inject more funds into the stock market.

“Majority of the sectors were elected as gainers - with a few exceptions – were receiving huge support from buyers. Investors, however, turned their backs on the newly issued shares.”

Beximco Limited has again become the most traded stocks with shares worth nearly Tk25 crore changing hands, followed by Grameenphone, Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd Bangladesh, Mobil Jamuna Limited Bangladesh, Beximco Pharma and Bangladesh Shipping Corporation.
