For fiscal year 2018-19, the government has set the total revenue target – tax and non tax revenue - at Tk3,39,280 crore, which is around 13.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.
Of the above total amount, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been tasked to source Tk2,96,201 crore, which is 11.67% of GDP and 31.64% higher from the revised target of FY2017-18.
The NBR was given these gigantic targets despite negative revenue trends and continuous failure in achieving revenue targets.
In the outgoing fiscal year, the government asked the NBR to provide Tk2,48,190 crore in revenues. However, it later downsized the target to Tk2,25,000 crore with a revised budget, due to negative revenue trends.
For FY2018-19, the Non-NBR tax revenue goal was set at Tk9,727 crore and the Non-Tax Receipt goal was set at Tk33,352 crore.
