Prices of onion in the local markets have come down to a reasonable level due to many effective initiatives of the government and production of new batch of onion in the country, claims the commerce minister.
Tofail Ahmed’s remarks came in response to MP Md Abdullah’s question in the parliament on Monday.
Answering another supplementary question from lawmaker Shubid Ali Bhuiyan, the minister admitted that prices of rice and onion had gone up after the flood last year. “But government measures have brought them down. Information regarding no decrease in prices is wrong.”
However, until Monday, prices of onion had varied in different parts of Dhaka. The fresh batch of local onion was being sold between Tk50 to Tk60 per kg, while the price of Indian onions was fluctuating between Tk70-Tk110 per kg.
Tofail said more onions could not be imported from India as production was low there due to flood, which was also the same reason behind lower production in Bangladesh.
“Onion prices were over Tk100 per kg at one point. But that has come down to Tk55-60 because of the government’s initiatives,” he added.
