State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu said that onions will depart by train from India by Sunday and are expected to enter Bangladesh within the next three days.
He made these remarks in response to questions from journalists during a reception for the state minister and all the MPs, and an introductory meeting with active members of the Press Club organized by the Tangail Press Club on Saturday afternoon.
"I am not aware of any specific agreement regarding onion imports from India. I am also unsure if India has halted its onion exports," he added.
Titu emphasized that the market will operate naturally. If there is a price increase of Tk5-10, even without any intervention, action will be taken against hoarders.
“The Ministry of Commerce does not require police or magisterial action for normal market transactions,” he said.
He expressed confidence that there is an adequate supply of onions in the market, and prices are currently at reasonable levels.
Regarding the surge in rice prices, the state minister said that rice falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Food. Therefore, he refrained from commenting on matters concerning another ministry.
