Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak has said that immediate and effective measures will be taken to get the patent (geographical indication) of Tangail sarees.

He said that the ministry has urgently held a meeting with all concerned and given instructions in this regard.

He gave the information to the reporters after visiting the jute department in Motijheel on Sunday afternoon.

Addressing the officials, the minister said that effective measures should be taken to stop the violence of the middlemen to ensure the appropriate price of raw jute to the farmers.

According to the “Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010”, the use of jute bags is mandatory in 19 products. If anyone uses plastic in these products, then legal action will be strengthened.

Although the campaign is ongoing throughout the country, special campaigns have to be conducted in the current context, he added.

The minister said that the production of jute has increased manifold in recent years due to proper supply of seeds to ensure jute cultivation as well as other material support to the farmers. The market price of jute is being monitored at all times to ensure the supply of raw jute required in the country and to increase the trend of export of jute and jute products. As a result, jute mills are able to collect jute uninterruptedly, which plays an important role in export earnings.

Mentioning that all efforts will continue to build a Smart Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through the implementation of “Vision 2041”, the minister said that the government's consistent and timely patronage is continuing to enrich and modernize the jute sector of Bangladesh.

At present, policy support is being provided to jute sector stakeholders along with cash assistance in export sector of versatile jute products.

He said: “As a result of the formulation and implementation of multifaceted action plans of the government in the jute sector, this sector is making an outstanding contribution to the national economy. In the era of sustainable development, there has been a huge demand for eco-friendly jute and jute products worldwide. Everyone should work together to increase the export of eco-friendly jute products.”

Earlier on Thursday, India claimed the GI rights of this saree produced in Tangail district of Bangladesh. India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry recognized this famous saree as its own GI product. The Ministry of Culture of India informed this news in a post on their verified Facebook page.
