Trader’s death halts export through Benapole port

Update : 13 Apr 2013, 12:29 PM

The export of Bangladeshi goods to India through the Benapole land port remained suspended for about two hours following the death of a transport businessman in a road accident in the port area on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as transport businessman M Ali Jinna, 62, a resident of the Baroachra village of Benapole.

The police said an Indian jute-laden truck ran over Jinna at the export terminal centre at about 8am while he was returning home from his morning walk, leaving him dead on the spot.

Locals later caught the truck, the indiv who was driving the vehicle at the time, managed to escape. The truck was handed over to local police.

Workers at the port also halted the India-bound Bangladeshi trucks carrying goods protesting the killing and demanding an exemplary punishment to the driver, disrupting the export of Bangladeshi goods to India through the country’s biggest land port for about two hours from 9am.

The deadlock came to an end two hours later following an intervention by local businessmen.

However, import activities through the port were normal.
