“Bangladesh and the UK have achieved a lot of things in trade and commerce and these are wrapped in trust and labour. So we will have to ensure that this bond cannot be ruined after the Brexit,” She said.
The visiting British MP came up with the remarks after a meeting with with Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday.
Rushanara Ali arrived in Bangladesh on December 18 on her maiden tour as Trade Envoy.
Talking about the Brexit’s impact, she said Britain’s exit from the European Union would not affect the trade relations between Bangladesh and the UK.
She said both the countries had been experiencing a new situation because of Britain’s exit from the EU, “and after two years, the UK government will start trade discussion with the countries out of the EU.”
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said the Bangladeshi born British prime minister’s Trade Envoy earlier declared “every son of the soil is the ambassador of Bangladesh.”
He said: “After implementation of the Brexit by the UK government, Bangladesh will start negotiation with the UK.”
Currently, Bangladesh export earnings is more than $35bn, of which the UK is the third largest export destination of the Bangladeshi goods. In FY2015-16, the export to UK was $3.81bn.
