Tea garden workers are possibly the most deprived faction of society. Starting from poor wages to cruel living conditions, they are victims of all sorts of injustice.
And with the view to being a part of the solution, IDLC Finance has teamed up with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to improve maternal, neonatal health rights and nutrition in the tea gardens of Sylhet.
Under the partnership, IDLC will support the renovation of the tea gardens’ health facility with water and sanitation and hygiene (WASH) block and provide necessary medical equipment and logistics in seven tea gardens.
UNICEF will ensure the capacity-building of the tea garden health service providers with the necessary training to connect the tea gardens’ health facilities with the government system for better services and sustainability.
About 7,000 women, 3,000 children under the age of five and 5,000 adolescents will be benefitted from the initiative.
“We always try to go the extra mile when it comes to helping the society where they need it most,” said M Jamal Uddin, deputy managing director of IDLC Finance.
This partnership will be setting an example of the corporate sector’s championing role in addressing critical national issues together with relevant stakeholders, he added.
“Partnerships like this one will help reimagine how socially responsible private sector entities can contribute to the establishment of a better society for all children no matter where they are born and raised,” said Tomoo Hozumi, country representative of UNICEF in Bangladesh.
Without healthy and well-educated children, it is not possible to envisage sustainable development in any society, be it economic or social.
“The private sector has a critical role to play in this regard together with the government as well as the other actors in the society,” he added.
