Ongoing row among Islami Bank board of directors

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has said that the board of directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited has been engaged in an internal row. Following a meeting with the Bangladesh Insurance Association at the Secretariat, the finance minister told reporters about the row.

Muhith said: “This row among the Islami Bank board of directors has been ongoing but I cannot say why it has not yet come to an end. “The government will not interfere in the bank until the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) wants to delve into the matter,” he said. “The current bank chairman, Arastoo Khan, is a capable person. I hope he can bring the matter under control,” he added.

The row is over the appointment of new staff, that Islami Bank Vice-chairman Professor Ahsanul Alam claims were made on paying bribes. Due to the row between him and chairman Arastoo, two groups in the board have also been created with the 21 directors supporting either Arastoo or Ahsanul, and each group calling the other a liar.

In a statement released on May 20, nine of these directors of the country's largest private bank threatened to resign from their posts. Professor Ahsanul Alam has claimed that three directors who are abroad have also opted in support of this statement.

Arastoo Khan, also a former secretary, said, "Everything I said in the press conference on Thursday is certain and true. The vice-chairman is not working in a manner that is proper,” The press conference was held on May 18 at the bank’s headquarters in Dilkusha of Motijheel in Dhaka.
