Bangladesh Bank governor Md Mostakur Rahman has agreed in principle with the seven-point demands raised by the Islami Bank Conscious Customer Forum, the leaders of the organization said.

Prof Nur Nabi Manik told reporters after a meeting held at Bangladesh Bank in Motijheel in the capital on Wednesday (June 17).

He also said that the governor took the initiative to hold a meeting after the aggrieved shareholders and customers of the bank submitted a memorandum containing seven-point demands on Tuesday.

Manik said that the governor listened carefully to the demands in the meeting and agreed in principle.

He further said: “Our clear demand is that those involved in financial irregularities or scams cannot be in the chairman or board of directors of Islami Bank in any way. In addition, the bank’s board will be composed of ethical, professional and non-partisan people.”

He hoped that if the new board is formed in light of the seven-point demands, customer confidence in Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC will be further strengthened and the stability of the bank will be restored.

The forum further said that if the demands are implemented, they will play a helpful role in the restructuring and progress of the bank by delivering a positive message across the country.

The organization’s seven-point demands include: formation of an independent and competent board of directors, reconsideration of the issue of share ownership change in 2017 and restoration of the rights of the real owners, formation of a special tribunal and ensuring speedy trial against those involved in bank robbery allegations, recovery of looted money and confiscation of assets.

In addition, the seven points also demand refraining from controversial decisions to remove instability and panic in the banking sector, amending Section 18/A of the Banking Companies Act, and withdrawing misleading political statements related to banks.

No official detailed statement was immediately available from Mostakur Rahman regarding the meeting.
