Inflation exceeds wage growth for 53rd straight month

People’s purchasing capacity keeps shrinking

Update : 08 Jul 2026, 06:09 PM

The purchasing power of ordinary citizens in Bangladesh has been systematically declining for 53 consecutive months, as national wage increments continue to trail behind soaring inflation rates, official data shows.

According to the latest report from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the country's overall inflation rate stood at 9.16% in June, slightly down from 9.42% in May.

However, the national wage growth rate was capped significantly lower at 8.18%.

This disparity means that the real income of citizens has been actively shrinking every month since January 2022—the last time wage growth actually outpaced inflation.

The continuous erosive economic trend has put low-income and middle-class households under immense financial stress.

Since roughly 86% of Bangladesh’s economic activities rely on the informal sector—employing over 50 million individuals—the lag in wage adjustment hits the working class the hardest.

Facing sharp drops in disposable income, many families have been forced to aggressively cut back on non-essential expenditures like entertainment and travel, triggering a negative ripple effect across local businesses.

Adding to the complexity, a new pay scale for approximately 1.5 million government employees takes effect this July.

While this provides relief to public sector workers, economic experts warn it may inadvertently stoke further inflation, driving up market prices, house rents, and transportation costs, which will disproportionately impact those in the private and informal sectors.

Khondaker Golam Moazzem, research director at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), noted that inflation is unlikely to cool down anytime soon.

To mitigate the crisis, he advised the government to pressure the private sector to raise employee wages, strengthen market monitoring against cartels, and ensure that social safety net benefits accurately reach the most vulnerable populations.
