The government has proposed expanding social safety net programs in the 2026–27 fiscal year budget, with plans to increase both the number of beneficiaries and the amount of allowances.

The proposed measures are expected to benefit millions of low-income people across the country, including elderly citizens, widows, and people with disabilities.

The government says the initiative is aimed at strengthening social protection and providing greater support to vulnerable groups amid ongoing economic challenges.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in parliament on Thursday.

The proposed budget, the first under the current government, has an outlay of Tk938,000 crore.
