Belgian grand prix: Timing and the Verstappen penalty explained

The Belgian Grand Prix kicks off at 7pm Bangladesh time on Sunday, July 28

Update : 28 Jul 2024, 06:38 PM

Formula 1 heads to Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix, bringing one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory.

The opening 13 rounds have seen seven different drivers from four different teams claim victories, a stark contrast to last year’s Red Bull dominance.

Max Verstappen currently leads the championship by 76 points. However, McLaren’s resurgence, led by Lando Norris, means the title race is still open. Norris, who won his maiden race in Miami, had opportunities to win in Canada, Spain, Austria, Britain, and Hungary but fell short due to minor errors by both driver and team.

Last week’s Hungarian Grand Prix saw McLaren secure a 1-2 finish, causing a brief stir in the team dynamics. The team asked Norris to relinquish the lead to teammate Oscar Piastri, whose strategy was compromised to secure the team’s result. This incident created a tense moment, reminiscent of high-stakes moments in sports.

Despite Verstappen dropping points and Sergio Perez’s ongoing struggles, McLaren is now just 51 points behind Red Bull in the constructors’ standings. As the summer break approaches, the fight for the championship is intensifying. Who do you think will emerge victorious before the season pause?

Weather watch

Current forecasts suggest a dry race day on Sunday, but showers might impact qualifying on Saturday. However, weather at Spa-Francorchamps, located in the hilly Ardennes, can be unpredictable and change rapidly.

A brief history of the Belgian Grand Prix

The Belgian Grand Prix dates back to 1925 and was part of the inaugural F1 championship in 1950. Since then, it has only missed six years, making it one of the most frequented venues in F1 history. Spa is known for its challenging and dangerous layout, having seen several severe accidents and fatalities. Recent modifications, particularly around the Eau Rouge-Raidillon complex, aim to enhance safety. Despite its fearsome reputation, its long, high-speed corners and picturesque setting make it a favorite among drivers.

Predictions for the top three

Based on current form, McLaren seems poised for success. It’s likely Lando Norris will overcome his recent near-misses to lead a McLaren 1-2 finish, with teammate Oscar Piastri securing another podium. Lewis Hamilton is expected to maintain his recent strong form and take third place, given that Verstappen is set to incur an engine penalty. This penalty means he might not be able to make his usual rapid ascent through the grid.

Surprise of the weekend

Expect some unexpected drama from the Alpine team. Drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon will likely make a spirited charge through the field, delivering a mix of aggressive racing and colorful commentary, adding an extra layer of excitement to the weekend.

The Belgian Grand Prix promises thrilling action and pivotal moments in the championship title.
