A healthy and eco-friendly workplace  motivate readymade garment (RMG) workers to give a 100%, said the speakers.

They also said that currently, there is a shortage of RMG workers across the major industry hubs of the country. Only a healthy and good factory environment can attract more workers.

They were speaking at the certificate giving ceremony in the capital on Monday, where SM Sourcing – world’s highest rated Leed-certified factory building – received its Leed platinum certificate from the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

At the ceremony, Santanu Dutta Gupta, USGBC faculty and associate director – marketing of the USGBC, said that starting work with Leed was not so easy as there were many challenges in creating awareness among  manufacturers.

“However, now the work has become much easier as an ecosystem has been established in Bangladesh and the whole world is recognizing this Leed movement of Bangladesh.

“Getting Leed certified is a stringent framework, scoring 80 here is tough enough. However, SM Sourcing got a score of 106 which is undoubtedly commendable,” he added.

He also said that it is high time to intensify the competition among the manufacturers. They are now working on V5 certificate system which will be more challenging, it will be more difficult to get platinum certificate here.

“But the progress of Bangladesh is commendable, so, it can be said that a number of factories will even get V5 platinum certificates,” he added.

Last December, Gazipur-based SM Sourcing obtained leadership in energy and environmental design (Leed) certificate in the platinum category at Leed O+M; Existing Building v4 rating system with a smart score of 106 out of 110, which is the highest ever score in the world as a factory building.

The journey of SM Sourcing started as a buying house in 2013, then as a garment unit in around 2017-18.

Currently, they have 5000 workers in their 3 factories with annual turnover $70 million from their major destinations like the US, EU and Japan.

Mirza Shams Mahmud CEO of SM Sourcing, said that the requirements for obtaining BNBC and Leed certification are almost the same, with some percentage rate difference.

“It was mainly while applying for the BNBC certificate that I came up with the idea of working with Leed,” he added.

He also said that finding workers in the RMG sector has become a challenge and a good factory environment can attract more workers in this sector.

“Only if we can provide a healthy work environment, then we can expect 100% effort from the worker,” he added.

It is actually possible to participate in the green movement only if the entrepreneurs have goodwill. Leed certificate holders always get priority in terms of fair price and it favours the manufacturers in bargaining.

“People said that it costs more primarily, but I think that cost comes up in the short term through less energy and water consumption. I think, all RMG factories can go green if they desire,” he added.

Ananta Ahmed, international green building expert of Leed AP, USGBC Faculty and the principal Leed consultant of 360 TSL said that Leed is not just a certificate; it is the most effective business management system.

“If we understand Leed Green Building Concepts in a factual way, the cost is not an issue and if we analyze the costs and benefits in a meaningful way, we will see Leed Green Building Cost less than regular buildings and make profit,” he added.

He also presented a keynote where he mentioned that SM Sourcing is 51% more energy efficient, uses 36% renewable energy, harvests 100% rainwater and many more.
