Our favourite restaurants of 2023

Here’s our best picks from all of last year

Update : 12 Jan 2024, 12:06 AM

We felt it was only fair to share our favourite restaurants from 2023, as we've had the pleasure of experiencing quite a few remarkable ones.

Takumi: A gem of authentic Japanese cuisine in Dhaka

Takumi stands out as a rare gem among the city's numerous fusion eateries, offering authentic Japanese cuisine to both Japanese patrons and the local residents of Dhaka. What sets them apart is their commitment to providing traditional Japanese dishes, going beyond the typical fare familiar to Dhaka residents.

We were delighted to explore some authentic dishes, such as their takoyaki and Shiratama kinako, which left a lasting impression. The takoyaki, a unique take on traditional octopus balls, showcased a transformed chewy texture through deep-frying, while the flavour was elevated with the addition of bonito flakes. Their shiratama kinako, featuring washed rice balls in blackened syrup topped with soybean dust, captured our hearts with its exquisite combination of sweet and savory flavours.

Meeting Takumi's owner, Yohei Sasaki, added a special touch to our experience. We were deeply moved by his efforts to overcome the language barrier with his Bengali-speaking staff, exemplifying a genuine connection between the owner and the restaurant's multicultural environment.

La Mirchi: Uttara's culinary haven with unparalleled variety

At La Mirchi, the challenge of serving a variety of cuisines while maintaining high quality and consistency is expertly met. Our day at La Mirchi in Uttara was truly delightful, with each meal exceeding our expectations. From the savoury chicken alfredo to the rich Dal Makhni and their specialty, the blackened Cajun chicken, every dish on the menu was a culinary delight.

La Mirchi not only excels in offering delicious meals but also brings healthy competition to other establishments in the area. Their dedication to excellence is evident, making them a standout choice in Uttara.

Mumbai Express: A haven for genuine north Indian flavours in Dhaka

Mumbai Express earns its spot as one of the few places in Dhaka serving genuine Indian cuisine, particularly from North India. Their offerings boast excellent flavours, with standout dishes like the delectable kebabs—hariyali, tikka, and malai—alongside stellar palak paneer and daals. A highlight of our culinary journey in 2023 was their unforgettable papri chaat, creating a cherished memory that lingers.

While we've explored many restaurants, these three stood out the most as we reminisced about the wonderful flavours we experienced last year. We highly recommend trying them out for yourself.
