Impersonation on social media is a common occurrence that can happen to anyone

Update : 22 Nov 2023, 08:22 PM

Have you ever received a direct message on Instagram from a friend, only to find that you don't recognize the account? If so, it's possible that your friend is being impersonated by someone else.

Impersonation on social media is a common occurrence that can happen to anyone. Therefore, it's essential for all of us to play a role in safeguarding our online information and ensuring the security of our identities against theft or malicious activities.

Now, let's address the situation of receiving a suspicious direct message. What steps should you take if you suspect that your friend or someone you know is being impersonated on Instagram?

On Instagram, only the person facing impersonation can file a report. However, you can assist by taking the following actions:

  • Reach out to the person being impersonated via email or telephone and encourage them to report the account.
  • Use the "direct message" feature to contact the person being impersonated and advise them to file a report.

If the imposter account is pretending to be someone you're authorized to represent (e.g., your child), you can report the account using Instagram Help Center within the app.

In the event that someone is impersonating you on Instagram, ensure that you report it either through the app or by visiting www.instagram.com/hacked/.

Keep in mind that your report is anonymous unless you're reporting an intellectual property infringement.

The account you reported won't be able to see who reported them.

Protect yourself before this happens to you

Enhancing the security of your Instagram account involves taking a few key steps. Consider the following:

  • Strengthen your account by activating two-factor authentication (2FA) and opting for a unique password or passphrase. This adds an extra layer of protection, making it significantly more challenging for perpetrators to exploit the "Forgot Password" feature to claim ownership of your account.
  • Ensure that your email and phone numbers are current and accessible within your Instagram account. This step is crucial for account recovery and communication purposes.
  • Just as you exercise caution in real-life interactions, be discerning about friend requests from strangers on Instagram. Additionally, avoid divulging excessive personally-identifying information, such as your address or phone number.
  • Stay vigilant and actively manage your security settings through the Security Check Up feature on your Instagram app. Here's a quick guide:
  • Open the Instagram app on your smartphone and tap on the small profile icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap the three-dash menu button ( ) located in the top right-hand corner.
  • Select the "Settings and Privacy" option.
  • Tap on "Accounts Centre."
  • Choose "Password and Security" under Account Settings.
  • Opt for "Security Checkup" under Security Checks.
  • Select your Instagram Account and follow the prompts provided.

By incorporating these measures, you contribute to bolstering the security of your Instagram account and minimizing the risk of unauthorized access.
