The conference was held from April 21-28, and was jointly organised by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), International Center on Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) of IUB and the Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BCAS).
More than 300 delegates from across the world attended the CBA10, which is the latest in a series of international conferences looking at how local communities can adapt to climate change.
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, and president, Inter-Parliamentary Union, attended the program as the special guest. He mentioned that togetherness and partnership is very important to combat climate change. “We have to integrate adaptation and mitigation,” he said.
Saleemul Huq, director, International Center on Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) of IUB, provided a brief summary on the conference.
Among others, Prof M Omar Rahman, vice chancellor, IUB; Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest; Dr Paul Desanker, UNFCCC secretariat, Bonn, Germany; Prof Dr Shamsul Alam, member, Planning Commission of GED, and Dr Atiq Rahman, executive director, Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BCAS) also spoke on the occasion.
Through strengthening networks, knowledge sharing and supporting collaboration, CBA 10 aimed to enhance the capacity of practitioners, governments and donors to scale-up, mainstream, monitor and support community-based adaptation that reaches the ever-increasing numbers of vulnerable poor people affected by climate change. The theme of this year’s conference was “Enhancing Urban Community Resilience,” which included a three-day field visit to CBA projects in different ecosystems across Bangladesh, such as drought, flood-prone, forest and urban areas.Participants also discussed the latest developments in CBA best practice, policy and theory in different sectors across the globe, with a focus on the urban circumstances.
