Bangladesh does not have direct ship movement with five countries of the Scandinavian region. A discussion is going on between Chittagong Port and Gothenburg Port of Sweden to resolve the situation.

Mehdi Hasan, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Sweden, told Bangla Tribune: “On January 24, we held a virtual meeting with all those involved in this matter. The meeting was attended by government representatives as well as private business representatives such as BGMI, freight forwarders, representatives of ship owners, shippers' council.”

On the Swedish side were senior officials from the Port of Gothenburg, he added.

He said, in the meeting, the government and private representatives agreed that if direct communication is ensured, trade with the region will be easier. “We invited the private sector because they are the ones doing the business so their views matter,” he added.

The five countries in the Scandinavian region have high per capita incomes and there is a demand for products produced in Bangladesh and potential to generate new demand. He said that they were encouraging the private sector to be interested in their market.

Gothenburg is the only deep-sea port in the region and any ship can anchor there, he said. As a result, it is possible to increase trade relations with the five countries through the sea.

Notably, the five countries are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Scandinavia.
