Major chicken producers promise Tk30–40 price cut per kg

Between 15% to 20% of the chicken demand on the market is met by corporate institutions

Update : 23 Mar 2023, 08:30 PM

The poultry association's four largest producers have agreed to lower chicken prices in the wholesale market by Tk30–40 per kg.

Following a meeting on Thursday with representatives of the four major chicken producers including Kazi Farms, Aftab Bahumukhi Farms, CP Bangladesh and Paragon Poultry and Hatchery, AHM Shafiquzzaman, director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection disclosed the information.

The consumer rights chief said these businesses would offer wholesale sales at their farm gates for Tk190 to Tk195 per kg. The cost of chicken is currently between Tk220 and Tk230 per kg.

He added that a reduction of Tk30 to Tk40 in prices is expected at the consumer level.

He assured that the authority would remain vigilant and keep an eye on the market.

Between 15% to 20% of the chicken demand on the market is met by corporate institutions.

AHM Shafiquzzaman said earlier on Wednesday that the cost of a single broiler chicken cannot, in any way, exceed Tk200, but consumers are being charged up to Tk280 in some markets throughout the capital.

He also added that his team submitted eight proposals for remedial measures to the government and that if there are any irregularities in any market, the relevant market management committee will be subject to punishment.

According to market observers, broiler chicken has always been a reasonably priced source of protein for the general public.

But within the last two to three months, the price soared to nearly Tk120, making it unaffordable for the average consumer.
