The High Court has appointed Barrister Anita Ghazi Rahman as the new chairman of  Sundarban Courier Service Pvt Ltd for a period of six months to preside over the company's board meetings and annual general meetings.

The high court bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar gave the order last Monday.

According to the case file, the court found it appropriate to appoint an independent chairman in the matter, and as a result appointed Anita Ghazi for the role, who is currently playing the role of an Independent Director at Chittagong Security Exchange.

As a result of this order, the newly appointed chairman will play a very supportive role in appointing shareholders and forming the board of directors of Sundarban Courier Service Limited, a source told Dhaka Tribune.

On May 30, 2020, the Chairman of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology and Founder of Sundarban Courier Service Limited Imamul Kabir Shanto passed away from Covid-19.

Since then, there has been no managing director and chairman in the company for the last two years, and the AGM and board of directors of the company will be constituted under the administrator with the intervention of the court that was sought earlier.

The court-appointed chairman has been entrusted with the power to call, conduct and hold a board meeting of the company at her earliest convenience to take necessary action for the registration of shares in favour of the people who have inherited shares from the majority shareholder and the deceased Managing Director Imamul Kabir Shanto.

As per the court orders, in the AGM, the shareholders shall decide as to whether the surviving brother of deceased Imamul Kabir Shanto, namely, Muhammad Humayan Kabir, would be nominated as the director of the company or not.

The chairman has been given the power to go through all the relevant papers of the company, starting from its incorporation to date, including the earlier minutes of the board meetings, EGMs, AGMs and all the previous audit reports.

Following the death of the founder, several allegations of corruption, indiscipline, as well financial mismanagement have been raised against the company.

The country’s first private and the largest courier company, Sundarban Couriers, started from an idea shared by two friends almost four decades ago - to build a courier service company.

Returning to Bangladesh from Germany in 1983, Imamul Kabir Shanto and Hafizur Rahman Pulok pursued and succeeded in doing just that.

The company has 700 covered vans and every day, 110 vans travel to Dhaka with products from all over Bangladesh and 110 vans leave Dhaka every night.

The company also has a dedicated wing for e-commerce enterprise support, which includes product delivery and cash collection.

Currently, 150 to 200 e-commerce companies use SCS for deliveries outside Dhaka and more than 10,000 products are delivered through the company.

Additionally, 100 regular bikers are appointed all around the country to deliver these products.
