In March, e-commerce purchases through cards have increased significantly since last July as the total transaction amount crossed Tk900 crore.
According to data from Bangladesh Bank, an amount of TK908 crore was spent using cards on goods and services from different e-commerce sites in March, which is about 18% more than the month before. Pre-Ramadan sales of groceries and similar goods have especially favoured this growth.
Daraz, the top e-commerce platform in Bangladesh, saw a growth of more than 40% year on year in March. Beauty products, fashion items and groceries have contributed to this growth.
Other companies such as Chaldal have also experienced an increase in sales.
Industry insiders say that the e-commerce sector would have grown at a much faster rate if the controversies and schemes surrounding e-commerce platforms like Evaly had not taken place back in July.
According to the central bank’s data, around twenty-five e-commerce websites in the country received money from customers in advance but failed to deliver them which led to the customers losing faith in e-commerce websites.
