China likely to import more food from Bangladesh

This is expected to help boost trade between the two nations

Update : 22 Mar 2022, 07:40 PM

China is likely to allow the import of potato, mango, jackfruit, guava, soybean meal and aromatic rice from Bangladesh, officials said.

The Bangladeshi embassy in Beijing had requested clearance to export the commodities from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) department of animal and plant quarantine in July of last year.

According to the officials, the GACC has requested detailed information about the items in accordance with the access procedures for agricultural product inspection, as it requires a thorough pest risk analysis before providing permission of importing any agricultural items in China.

This is expected to help boost trade between the two nations, given that exporters can meet the standard requirements of China.

The embassy officials have recently sent a letter to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for feedback on the GACC’s questionnaire so that the officials can move ahead with the trade deal with China.

Bangladesh currently produces around 10 million tons of potato per year, of which 20% remains in surplus after fulfilling local demand. A large portion of the produce is being exported to other countries in the region and in the EU already.
