Bangladesh seeks FTA with South American trade bloc

Mercosur, or the Southern Common Market, is an economic and political bloc originally comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay

Bangladesh has expressed keen interest in signing free trade agreement (FTA) with Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) to boost trade and investment.

Newly-appointed Bangladesh Ambassador to Brazil, Sadia Faizunnesa, said this when she presented her letters of credence as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bangladesh to  Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on Saturday.

Mercosur, or the Southern Common Market, is an economic and political bloc originally comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by Foreign Minister of Brazil Carlos França.

Highlighting on Bangladesh’s strength as the second largest apparel producer and world-class pharmaceutical manufacturer, the ambassador sought President Bolsonaro’s support to negotiate the FTA with Mercosur.

Faizunnesa conveyed the greetings of the president and prime minister of Bangladesh to the Brazilian president.

She also described the recent socioeconomic development of Bangladesh that took place under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Bangladeshi envoy also requested President Bolsonaro for his support to further expand the trade, economic and agriculture cooperation between our two countries

The Brazilian President promised his support in further enhancing the trade relationship with Bangladesh. 

“Brazil is one of the largest democracies in the world,” President Bolsonaro said, adding that his government is eager to strengthen its relationship with all friendly countries including Bangladesh.
