Bangladesh Shop Owners' Association on Sunday urged the government to keep markets and shops open from August 6.
Md Helal Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Shop Owners' Association told Dhaka Tribune: “With the dire Covid-19 situation in the country, there is no other way. Most of the shops remained shut amid the pandemic. As a result, goods are getting damaged,”
He also said that small owners are saddled with debts that are far more difficult for them to pay back.
“We will follow strict health guidelines at shops from 8am to 10pm,” he further said.
When asked about public transport re-opening, he said: “Vaccinations are already available in the country. Public health experts opined that only strict health guidelines can save lives. Public transport re-opening solely goes towards the government’s decision.”
On Sunday another 231 people died from Covid-19 in Bangladesh and 14,844 new infections were recorded.
The latest additions took the country’s death toll to 20,916, total caseload to 1,264,328 and the total number of recoveries to 1,093,266.
