The government will train 102,400 drivers and auto-mechanics in the next five years, aiming to send them abroad as migrant workers.
The project worth Tk267.34 crore is scheduled to be completed by June 2024.
The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved the project.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the ECNEC meeting.
"If successfully implemented, this project will bring a bright fortune for all of the trained people. It will also bring higher remittance into the country," said Planning Minister MA Mannan during a briefing after the ECNEC meeting at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
According to project document, the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) will appoint trainers and other required manpower at all 64 Technical Training Centres in the country.
The planning minister said both the male and female would get the opportunities of trainings as drivers and auto-mechanics.
"This initiative will meet the growing demand for drivers at home and abroad," he observed.
Meanwhile, the ECNEC also approved nine other projects involving Tk4,611.62 crore.
The projects include Construction of Inland Container and Bulk Terminal in Narayanganj at the cost of Tk392 crore, Modernization of Waste and Oil Substance Management System at Mongla Sea Port at the cost of Tk401.24 crore, Construction of Pure water Supply Infrastructure and Prevention of Waterlogging in Sylhet City at the cost of Tk1,228.02 crore, Establishment of Faridpur Textile Institution at the cost of Tk 60.39 crore, Construction of Officers' Mess at Mirpur DOHS at the cost of Tk158.61 crore, Improvement of Schools in Haor Areas at the cost of Tk944.80 crore and Construction, Improvement, Expansion and Beautification of 342 schools in Dhaka City and Purbachal areas at the cost of Tk1,159.21 crore.
Besides, the ECNEC also approved the proposal for extension of time for Implementation of Tannery Industrial Village at Hemayetpur in Savar until June 2020.
Planning Division Secretary Md. Nurul Amin, General Economics Division member Shamsul Alam and IMED secretary Abul Mansur Md. Faizullah were present at the press briefing, among others.
