Tangail farmers to take up sugarcane cultivation after good harvest

Farmers say there is no government initiative to encourage sugarcane cultivation in the district

Update : 02 Sep 2018, 01:04 PM

Farmers in Tangail have seen large yields from this season’s sugarcane harvest. They are elated to get the expected price for their produce and the buyers are happy as the supply is adequate.

This year, sugarcane was cultivated on 599 hectares of land—100 hectares less than for last season. Production boomed because the crop did not suffer from any disease or insect infestation.

“I cultivated sugarcane on one bigha [1 hectare = 7.47494 bighas] this year. It has cost me about Tk25,000 and I hope to sell the sugarcane for Tk50,000,” said farmer Rakibul Islam from the Sadar Upazila’s Baghil Union.

Another farmer, Shayan Mia, said the production on parts of his fields was poor. “But the price is good and I hope to make a profit,” he added.

Tangail district Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Abdul Razzak said their officials are constantly working with the farmers at the field level.

The DAE said last year’s sugarcane production in the district was 33,574 tons.
