Mobile phone operator Grameenphone has unveiled two co-branded 4G-enabled smartphones, to further expand the smartphone market and enable people to enjoy 4G services.
The two handsets Symphony G100 and Micromax B5 Pro were launched in Dhaka on Sunday, where Aminul Hassan, commissioner of Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) was present as the chief guest.
GP Deputy CEO and Chief Marketing Officer Yasir Azman, Head of Device Sarder Showkat Ali, CCAO Mahmud Hossain, Senior Director of Symphony Md Maksudur Rahman, and Vice President and International Business Head of Micromax Sameer Kakar, were also present in the program.
The Symphony G100 comes with 18.9 full vision display and 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, Android 8.1 Go Edition OS and 5 megapixel front and back cameras. This 4G enabled smartphone with 2500mAH battery is priced at Tk5,999.
On the other hand, Micromax B5 Pro, priced at Tk9,999 comes with a 5000 mAH battery that promises heavy-duty performance. The smartphone has intelligent face unlock, a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, Android 8.1 Oreo, 5 megapixel front and 13 megapixel rear cameras.
The phones will be available at all Grameenphone sales channels across the country. This was the second time the telecommunication company launched 4G-enabled smartphones ever since the 4G services were inaugurated on February 19.
Aminul Hassan said the government was working on how smartphones can be sold at reasonable prices, much to the convenience of the middle and low-income groups.
“We are working on making smartphones more affordable by engaging the mobile operator. A proposed 4G co-branding policy is being worked on,” the BTRC commissioner said, expressing his hope to introduce 5G services in the country in the near future.
The GP deputy CEO said: “We have taken a step further today to strengthen our 4G ecosystem by adding these two 4G smartphones. Coupled with our fastest network and unbeatable service quality these devices will help customers to enjoy the full benefit of the digital world.”
Maksudur Rahman urged the government to cut import taxes on smartphones, only to boost the market since a slow growth in the smartphone sales in the first two quarters this year is hindering various Internet-based initiatives such as e-commerce and m-commerce.
