Leaders of Bangladesh Garments Workers’ Unity Council (BGWUC) on Saturday demanded that RMG factory owners pay their employees’ wages and festival bonuses before 20th Ramadan.
They stated their demand at a human chain program in front of the National Press Club.
Leaders of the BGWUC, an umbrella body of different registered garment workers’ federations, also urged the Prime Minister to take necessary steps so that they can get their wages and bonuses on time.
The protesters said it seems RMG factory owners remain under so much stress during Ramadan that they hardly get time to pay their workers’ wages and bonuses.
“Workers can do their shopping smoothly and return home ahead of Eid happily if they are paid their wages and bonuses before 20th Ramadan,” said BGWUC president Mahatab Uddin Shahid.
Otherwise, he warned, the RMG workers will not be able to celebrate Eid smoothly. “The workers will besiege factory owners’ houses if necessary,” he said.
Bangladesh Garments Workers Federation President Towhidur Rahman, Bangladesh Revolutionary Garments Workers Federation President Salauddin Swapan, National Workers Federation President Amirul Haq Amin, spoke at the human chain among others.
