British MP visits Bangladesh to strengthen advocacy for ending child marriage

She is the Labour member of parliament for Tooting in London. She is a shadow minister for digital, media culture and sport within the opposition Labour Party. During her visit to Bangladesh, she met with the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs officials to raise issues in Child Marriage Restraint Act 2016. She had several meetings with “Girls Not Brides” global movement representatives to discuss advocacy strategies. She has visited VSO projects in Dinajpur, and met with Child Marriage Dowry Prevention Committee members and the beneficiaries. She held meetings with the district commissioner and local authorities to create strong relationships between the community and local volunteers. “No circumstance is special enough to get young girls trapped in the vicious cycle of child marriage,” Rosena Allin-Khan said, referring to the special circumstance clause in the much debated Bangladeshi law titled Child Marriage Restraint Act. She made the remark at the “Girls not Brides” conference at BRAC Center Inn, a joint effort of BRAC and VSO for hosting relevant organizations for talks. VSO works with national and international volunteers and local communities to advocate about child marriage and sexual reproductive health issues. It works with partner organisations, governments, corporations and communities to share skills and build capabilities.
