Arrest warrant issued against Zafrullah 

The International Crimes Tribunal has issued a warrant of arrest against Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury for failing to submit a fine of Tk5,000 in conviction of contempt of court. Tribunal 2 issued the arrest warrant on Thursday afternoon. However, the arrest is unusual as the Supreme Court has stayed Zafrullah's fine until July 5.

ASI accused in female constable rape remanded 

A Dhaka has granted a three-day remand to former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Kalimur Rahman in the case of gang-rape of female police constable. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Meher Nigar Suchona passed the order on Thursday afternoon, rejecting the bail plea filed by Kalimur's lawyer.

Abid, Motahar made DU BCL president, secy 

Abid Al Hasan and Motahar Hossain Prince have been made president and secretary of the Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League. The student wing of ruling party announced the names on Thursday afternoon.

Six Jamaat men held in Habiganj 

Police have detained six Jamaat leaders, including party's district unit chief, in a drive at Lalkhai in Habiganj. The detainees are district Jamaat ameer Abdur Rahman, Lakhai thana unit ameer Nur Uddin Ahmed, secretary Lutfur Rahman, joint secretary Hafez Fakhrul Islam, Anwar Hossain andMoshahid Ali.

DU admission tests begin October 9 

The admission tests for the first year honours courses at Dhaka University for 2015-16 academic session will begin on October 9. The online admission process will begin on August 20.

Khaleda's trial in Niko case to continue

The trial of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Niko graft case will continue as the High Court rejected her petition that was filed challenging the legality of the case proceedings. The court also orders Khaleda to surrender before the lower court within two months after the release of the order.

35th BCS written tests begin Sept 1 

The written tests for 35th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) will begin on September 1. Regarding the matter, Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) has issued a notification on Thursday. Details about venue and routine will be announced later, reads the notice signed by AIM Nesar Uddin, examination controller of the BCS.

Khaleda's graft cases hearing adjourned till July 23

The court has fixed July 23 for the next hearing in two graft cases – Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust cases. Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of the Special Judge Court-3 passed the order in presence of Khaleda on Thursday. The BNP chief appeared before the court at Bakshibazar around 10:30am amid tight security.

20 members of Ogyan Party held 

Detectives have arrested 20 members of an Ogyan party from different parts of the capital. Sedative medicine and other utensils used by them were recovered during the raids on Wednesday night, said Jahangir Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

9 killed in Carolina church shooting 

Nine people have died in a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston in the US state of South Carolina, officials say. City police chief Gregory Mullen said eight of the victims were killed inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Thursday, while another person died shortly afterwards.

Ramadan begins tomorrow 

As the new moon was not sighted anywhere in the country yesterday, the holy month of Ramadan 1436 Hijri will begin tomorrow, and the holy night of Qadr will be on July 14. The announcement came at the meeting of National Moon Sighting Committee at the Islamic Foundation’s Baitul Mukarram office last evening. The meeting was chaired by Religious Affairs Minister and Committee President Alhaj Matior Rahaman.
