Update : 14 Jan 2025, 05:51 PM

The bodies of a woman and her daughter were discovered in a bathroom at Kutupalong Rohingya Camp No 3 in Ukhiya upazila, Cox's Bazar, on Tuesday morning, the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) confirmed.

The deceased were Momtaz Begum, 55, and her daughter Subaida Bibi, 18, residents of Block F75 of the camp. Momtaz was the wife of the late Rashid Ahmed.

According to Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Siraj Amin, two of Momtaz’s sons, Nurul Haque and Rabiul Alam, woke up early for the Fajr prayer and noticed the light on in their mother and sister’s room.

Upon investigation, they found the room empty and began searching the vicinity. They discovered a locked bathroom nearby and, after peeking into an adjacent bathroom, saw their mother and sister lying on the floor.

Locals were alerted by their screams and rushed to the scene, breaking open the locked bathroom door and recovering the bodies.

An APBn team arrived shortly after being informed, but the bodies had already been moved outside the bathroom by locals.

Ukhiya Police were notified, and an inquest report was prepared.

Family members said that Momtaz and Subaida had been suffering from diarrhoea, fever, and throat pain for several days.

Ukhiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Arif Hossain reported that no visible injuries were found on Momtaz Begum’s body. However, Subaida Bibi had a reddish mark on her forehead, a faint mark on her neck, and slight traces of blood behind her ear.

Authorities are investigating the case to determine whether the deaths were natural or the result of foul play. The

bodies have been sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
