The newly-appointed Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh, Winnie Estrup Petersen, has said Myanmar should take back the Rohingyas currently living in Bangladesh.

"Myanmar should take back the Rohingyas," Petersen said when she met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), on Tuesday.

The PM's Press Secretary, Ihsanul Karim, briefed reporters after the meeting, reports UNB.

He said the prime minister emphasized the subject of repatriating the over-one-million Myanmar Rohingyas living in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina said her government is preparing an island, in Noakhali district, to temporarily shelter the Rohingyas.

The Danish ambassador said Denmark will continue to work with Bangladesh toward Bangladesh’s development.

Praising the progress in women’s empowerment in Bangladesh, she said Denmark wants to infuse new dynamism into bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government has ensured free textbook distribution for students up to grade 9, food security, and  better agricultural production for Bangladesh.

She said women are now working in every sector of the country, and are progressing in their fields.

She also said the government wants democracy to flourish in the country as her party has always fought for it.
