The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has raised the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), setting the price of a 12kg cylinder at Tk 1,837, up from Tk 1,585.
The new price, an increase of Tk 252, will take effect from 6:00pm on Sunday.
The regulator has also raised the price of autogas, used in vehicles, to Tk 84.62 per litre from Tk 73.09.
The price hike comes amid a severe LPG shortage in the market and allegations that cylinders were being sold at inflated prices.
Some had claimed the shortage was artificial, while others argued that a price increase would help restore normal supplies.
BERC said the latest adjustment was made in response to higher international LPG prices, shipping costs and diesel prices used for transportation.
Consumers had reported difficulties finding LPG cylinders in the two weeks before the new price was announced, although traders denied any shortage.
In September, there were also allegations that 12kg cylinders, officially priced at Tk 1,585, were being sold for Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,500.
It remains to be seen whether LPG supplies will return to normal following the price hike.
