Power generation at Unit-1 of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur was suspended on Friday morning after a mechanical fault developed in a pump.
Abu Bakar Siddique, chief engineer of the plant, confirmed the shutdown, saying repair work was underway and the unit was expected to resume generation by Saturday.
“Once the unit resumes, the electricity generated will be supplied to the national grid,” he said.
Plant sources said Unit-1 had been supplying around 50–55MW to the national grid before the shutdown.
Meanwhile, Unit-3 remains operational, generating around 170–180MW, while Unit-2 has been out of operation since 2020.
The shutdown comes as the country faces severe load-shedding amid an ongoing power shortage, raising further concerns over electricity supply.
