The gas supply disruption caused by a mechanical fault at a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) may be resolved within the next 2 days, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources said at an emergency briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The ministry also said the country has sufficient fuel oil stocks and is not facing any shortage.
Joint Secretary (Operation Wing) of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division Monir Hossain Chowdhury said the mechanical fault at the LNG floating terminal had disrupted natural gas supply, leading to queues at some compressed natural gas (CNG) stations.
He said: “Repair work is underway, and we hope the problem will be resolved within the next 2 days. The situation at CNG stations is very temporary and will not continue.”
Monir Hossain Chowdhury said Bangladesh's daily demand for natural gas is 3,800 million cubic feet, while only 2,700 to 2,800 million cubic feet can currently be supplied. He said the supply gap has existed for a long time, adding that gas exploration had not progressed for many years, although efforts have been made to advance exploration since the new government took office.
