Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has said that a supply capacity of 243 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) has been ensured, with 120mmcfd currently being supplied to the national grid.

The minister came up with the disclosure on Thursday in a written reply to a question from Member of Parliament AE Sultan Mahmud Babu during the sitting of the 13th National Parliament.

The seventh day of the first session of the parliament was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram.

The energy minister said exploration and extraction activities for new gas fields are continuing to address the country’s gas shortage.

As part of these efforts, 117 wells will be drilled and worked over within the next year under short-, medium- and long-term plans to boost gas supply from domestic sources.

Highlighting progress in exploration, development and workover activities carried out by Petrobangla, the minister said that 25 wells have been completed since 2022 under a broader plan to drill and work over 150 wells.

“These activities have ensured 243mmcfd of gas, and 120mmcfd is currently being supplied to the national grid,” he added.

Regarding the Onshore and Offshore Model PSC 2026, the minister said the ‘Onshore Model PSC 2026’ and ‘Offshore Model PSC 2026’, prepared by Petrobangla to facilitate oil and gas exploration on land and in offshore areas under production-sharing contracts, are now in the final stage of approval.

He further said that an estimated 1,535mmcfd of gas is expected to be added to the national grid once the drilling of all planned wells under Petrobangla’s work plan is successfully completed.
