The government has announced the introduction of a new ‘Fuel Pass’ system aimed at regulating the country’s fuel supply and preventing shortages.
The QR code-based initiative will allow registered vehicles to access fuel only within specified times and in predetermined quantities.
Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat on Monday , Joint Secretary of the energy division Monir Hossain Chowdhury, explained that each vehicle will be assigned a unique QR code.
“Vehicles will not be able to refuel multiple times before the designated interval, which is expected to curb excessive stockpiling and panic buying,” he said.
Initially, the system will target motorcycles, given the particularly high demand for octane fuel in this segment. An app-based digital platform is also being developed to record user information and monitor fuel consumption.
The Fuel Pass will be centrally issued and distributed through filling stations. The government said the program will begin on a limited scale, with plans for gradual nationwide expansion. Officials emphasized that the initiative is designed to ensure equitable fuel distribution, though full implementation may take some time.
