Around 6,000 litres of diesel that had been illegally stockpiled in 30 drums were seized during a special drive conducted by the district administration in the Patenga area of Chittagong.
The operation was carried out at Commissioner Ghat at around 10:45am on Friday.
The drive was led by Executive Magistrate Subrata Halder of the district administration, with participation from members of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and the Bangladesh Police. However, no one was detained during the operation.
The seized diesel has been kept in police custody. Authorities said a case is being prepared under the relevant provisions of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, preliminary investigations suggest that an unscrupulous syndicate had been illegally funneling fuel during transportation from seagoing vessels and oil depots before selling it in the local market.
