IAEA chief: Bangladesh on right track with nuclear power project

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Secretary General Yukiya Amano has expressed satisfaction over the safety standards of Bangladesh's maiden nuclear power project in Pabna's Ruppur.

Bangladesh is on the right track with the construction of the nuclear power plant as the benchmarks prescribed by an IAEA delegation during a visit earlier in 2010 has duly been fulfilled, he told reporters at an exchange of views during a visit at the project area on Monday.

Yukiya mentioned that safety and risk management issues are the things that need to be sorted out before moving ahead with nuclear power projects.

The government of Bangladesh was keeping in close touch with the IAEA to get the idea of the most efficient risk management and safety measures for the Ruppur nuclear power project, he said, adding that the IAEA believes Bangladesh had adopted the best practices and the state-of-the-art technology.

The IAEA Secretary General assured that they would continue the cooperation in providing the know-how of the safety and risk management of nuclear power projects in Bangladesh.

Science and Technology Minister Dr Yafes Osman, Bangladesh Ambassador in Vienna Abu Zafar and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr Naium Chowdhury were also present at the exchange of views.

The IAEA Secretary General later met Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq to discuss the security measures being taken for the under-construction Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.
