The government has finally withdrawn the restrictions on new electricity connections for large industries like steel mills, steel re-rolling mills and shopping malls.
Previously, consumers had to take permission from Power Division to get a connection above 5MW.
The government had imposed the restriction a few years ago due to an acute scarcity of electricity. Any consumer having over a load of 5MW are deemed to be large category consumers.
“As there is no power deficit, there will be no restriction on providing any electricity connections. We have already issued a circular in this regard,” Power Division Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus told the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
“The government has taken the decision that consumers will not need to take approval from Power Division to get new connections,” the circular said.
The decision was taken as power generation capacity has increased. The concerned power distribution companies may decide on load sanctions according to their rules and regulations, it said.
“We have received an instruction in this regard from the Power Division,” Rural Electrification Board Chairman Maj Gen Moin Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune.
The embargo was that the distribution entities will not be able to give any new connections to large consumers without permission from the Power Division.
As a result, distribution companies would forward applications from large consumers to the Power Division for permission.
Electricity generation capacity has crossed 15,000MW and 80% of the public are enjoying electricity connections, according to the Power Division.
