EC asks candidates to lodge complaints in writing

Update : 16 Apr 2015, 06:59 PM

Election Commissioner Shah Newaz has asked candidates to lodge their complaints in writing to the Election Commission.

“If someone has any specific complaint about violation of electoral code against a candidate he or she has to put forward it in writing to the EC, he told reporters.

He said this at the Agargaon Election Commission (EC) office yesterday.

He said the Election commission will not pay heed to verbal complaint of any person. After getting written complaint returning officers will take action.

Earlier, several candidates of Dhaka North and South city corporations voiced their allegations against electoral code violation by opponent candidates.

Afroza Abbas, wife of Mirza Abbas, alleged that Sayeed Khokon violated the electoral code of conduct.

Bikalpadhara-backed Mahi B Chowdhury and CPB-BSD-backed Abdulla Al Kafi – mayoral candidates for Dhaka North City Corporation – brought the allegation of violation of electoral code by their opponent Annisul Haque.

Many BNP leaders and activists blamed the EC and government for not ensuring level-playing field in the election campaign and brought allegation of electoral code violation against Awami League-backed candidates.

Shah Newaz said with the election day approaching the number of magistrate will increase.

They are taking steps in this regard. They have already fined candidates Tk30,0000 for violation of electoral rules.

Many reserved women candidates have complained against their symbols to EC in a view-exchange meeting of candidates organised by EC at Agargaon Krishibid Institute.

They said the EC gave them gender-bias symbols that reflects the lower status of women in a patriarchal society.

The bifurcated DCC and CCC polls are set to be held on April 28.
