BNP-supported mayoral aspirant Tabith M Awal has sought deployment of the army in the upcoming Dhaka City Corporations elections, scheduled to be held on April 28.
The mayoral hopeful made the demand after a view exchange meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed at Krishibid Institution Bhaban in the city's Khamarbari on Sunday afternoon.
"It is necessary to deploy the army during the city corporation election to maintain the law and order situation," Tabith said.
He said: "Many of the 20-party candidates are in jail. They should be granted bail to ensure their participation in the election."
He also demanded that licenced and illegal arms be controlled before the election.
Tabith's father Abdul Awal Mintoo, adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, filed the nomination paper for the Dhaka north mayoral race.
Mintoo's candidacy was cancelled by the Election Commission on April 1, the first day of scrutiny. His appeal against that decision was rejected by the High Court. Later, the Supreme Court also upheld the HC decision.
