The string of general strike and blockades enforced by the BNP-led alliance will soon come to a stop, said Health Minister Mohammad Nasim yesterday without explaining how that would happen.
Terming the political opposition’s movement a complete joke, Nasim claimed the people had rejected their call to topple the government.
The High Court last week asked the government and the BNP leaders to explain why political activities, blockades and general strikes detrimental to education and people’s lives should not be declared illegal and unconstitutional.
The court on that day had also ordered the government to immediately take measures to prevent violence and other subversive activities in the name of political movement.
Nasim said the Awami League would be in trouble when it goes into opposition and calls for similar movements. Addressing BNP chief Khaleda Zia, he said: “Stop this farcical movement immediately.”
He was speaking at a rally at Motijheel held to protest the violence and arson carried out by the BNP-Jamaat alliance to enforce their strikes.
New platform
Meanwhile, 92 pro-AL professional organisations formed a new alliance yesterday, named “Muktijoddha-Peshajibi-Janata Oikyo Mancho,” to protest the BNP-led alliance’s violence.
The platform’s convener Major General (retd) Helal Morshed made the announcement at the National Press Club.
