Update : 25 Feb 2015, 06:35 AM

A Dhaka court has directed BNP senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, the charge sheeted accused in the Zia orphanage graft case, to appear before it on March 4.

Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar, special judge-3 of Dhaka, passed the order on Wednesday, responding to a plea filed by ACC lawyer.

The court also issued an arrest warrant against BNP chief Khaleda Zia in two graft cases. Arrest warrants have also been issued against former BNP lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed in the Zia orphanage graft case.

The ACC in July 2009 filed the Zia Orphanage graft case against Khaleda, Tarique Rahman, and four others for embezzling over Tk 2.1 crore through the fake trust.

Tarique has been in London since September 11, 2008 on medical grounds, after securing parole in various cases. He faces 14 charges, of which four, including the August 21 grenade attack case, are on trial while the rest are stayed.

Recently, he made derogatory comments against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while delivering speeches at different programmes in London.

He has also been giving distorted versions of the history of Bangladesh since the January 5 national election this year. A dozen cases were filed against Tarique for making such comments.
