The BNP yesterday said that the government will have to shoulder the responsibility if the democratic process in the country gets hampered.
“The government has been encouraging extremism and blocking all paths of systematic movement and objective media reporting. As a result, confined democracy has reached the verge of extinction,” Salahuddin Ahmed, joint secretary general of the party, said in a press release.
Salahuddin also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will also have to appear before court someday for “genocide.”
She ordered the killing of opposition leaders and activists and the day of reckoning is not very far away, he said.
The press statement alleged that in the name of joint forces’ drive, the government has turned the cities, towns, ports and villages into valleys of death by carrying out cruel killings in the dark of night.
Claiming that not just protesters but also innocent people are being arrested, he said the nation will remember the sacrifices that these people have been making.
The release condemned the death of Shibir leader Emdad Ullah in “shootout” with law enforcers.
Salahuddin also condemned the arrest of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Mosaddek Ali Falu and demanded his immediate release.
Meanwhile, BNP’s student body Chhatra Dal yesterday announced a student strike at Dhaka University for February 4 and 5.
They demand assurances that they would be allowed to coexist with other student bodies on the campus and stopping of repression on political activists and general students.
Chhatra Dal also warned that they would go for non-stop student strike if their demands are not met.
Chhatra Dal President Rajib Ahsan and General Secretary Akramul Hasan made the announcement in a press release.
