Update : 20 Jan 2015, 01:18 PM

Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament Rawshan Ershad has extended support to the government in combating the ongoing "anarchy" in the country.

She made the statement while giving her speech on point of order in fifth session of the 10th parliament on Tuesday, 15 days after she hinted to withdraw her ministers from the cabinet.

Rawshan said: “There are anarchy everywhere in the country. In this circumstance, the opposition will extend its moral support to every decision taken by the prime minister for establishing law and order in the country.”

She urged the government to take stern action against the ongoing violent activities.

The opposition leader also suggested to form locality base anarchy protection committee to combat the situation.

The BNP-led 20-party has been observing nationwide non-stop roads and waterways blockade since January 5, protesting the confinement of Khaleda Zia.

The current blockade has been marked by violence and sporadic clashes between the police and protesters, leaving a number of people killed and injured.

Earlier on January 5, the first anniversary of the January 5, 2014 parliamentary elections, Rawshan announced to withdraw her ministers from the cabinet.

She said: “We have decided to withdraw our ministers from the cabinet. We have already talked to the chairman in this regard and decision will be taken very soon.”

Talking about Khaleda's confinement, Rawshan said: “We have heard BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been confined at her Gulshan office. The government knows about it better."

The BNP chief Khaleda Zia had been kept confined to her Gulshan party office since January 3.

Later on Monday, all the barricades in front of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan political office have been removed.

No sand-laden trucks, iron barricades or water cannon were seen in front of the party office, where Khaleda is staying for 16 days.

On Monday evening, hours after the removal of the barricades, the BNP chief addressed the media and declared to continue the ongoing blockade until further notice.

Political tensions between the Awami League-led Government and the BNP-led 20-party alliance have been increased in January 2015 on the first anniversary of the January 5, 2014 parliamentary elections, which the BNP boycotted.
