Hartal underway amid sporadic incidents

Update : 29 Dec 2014, 02:41 AM

The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance in protest of the denial of giving permission to hold rally in Gazipur, is underway across the country.

The hartal began at 6am and it will end at 6pm on Monday.

Vehicular movement is normal in the capital city.

The activists of Juba Dal and Swechasebak Dal reportedly brought out a procession in Pallabi area around 8am. Police opened fire and dispersed the activists from the area.

One striker was injured in the clash. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi along with some other leaders took position at the main gate of BNP’s Nayapaltan office since morning.

A good number of police have been seen in front of the BNP’s Nayapaltan office.

In Sylhet, police detained the convener of BNP’s Sylhet metropolitan unit and two Chhatra Dal activists at Chowhatta while they were trying to bring out a procession.

This is the second hartal enforced by the alliance since the January 5 elections boycotted by the BNP and affiliate political parties.

Border Guard Bangladesh officials said BGB men have been deployed in the major cities, including the capital, to maintain law and order, and they would remain posted until the further notice.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity announced that it would continue its regular services ignoring the strike.

On Saturday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement of the hartal in a press conference at party chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office.

The alliance also observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal on that day in Gazipur on the same issue.

Gazipur district administration imposed an indefinite ban on all gatherings from 2pm on Friday until further notice.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was scheduled to hold a meeting at Bhawal Badr-e-Alam College ground on Saturday but Chhatra League also announced a rally on the same venue.

In such a situation section 144 was imposed.

The BNP alleged that the government has imposed section 144 in Gazipur as part of its planned conspiracy to foil the rally.
