The Supreme Court yesterday deferred the leave-to-appeal hearing on the Zia Charitable Trust case until November 30.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s councel had challenged the High Court verdict that upheld the charge framing order against her in the case.
However, a five-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, which was supposed to pass an order on the appeal yesterday, did not mention any reason behind the deferral.
During the proceedings, the chief justice asked Khaleda’s counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain whether they had submitted the deeds of the trust before the court. Mahbub replied it was done on Monday evening.
Justice Muzammel then said they would pass the order in the case on November 30.
Khurshid Alam Khan, lawyer for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), told the Dhaka Tribune that the court would examine the deeds before giving the order.
The ACC filed the case on August 8, 2011 against Khaleda and the charges were framed by the Special Judge’s Court 3 on March 19 this year against Khaleda and three others.
On April 23, the High Court upheld an indictment order against the BNP chief rejecting her petition. Khaleda on July 6 filed the petition with the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict.
On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed her another petition regarding acceptance of charges and indictment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
